When the original box takes twice the space it needs
We replace the original box with a custom one that is considerably smaller. If the game has expansions, they all go into the same box: the saving is measured against the sum of all the boxes together and averages around 50% less shelf space.
The second advantage shows up as soon as the game leaves the house: a printed box survives the trip to a game night or a family gathering far better than the original cardboard, which pops open and warps.
And there is one case where an insert or a compact box stops being a luxury: when you sleeve your cards. Most original boxes do not allow for the extra thickness of sleeves, so the cards no longer fit or get crushed. If you want to protect your deck, you will need an organiser or a custom box either way.
